TRACY - The 15th-seeded Davis High School girls basketball team has grown to like playing teams in the southern part of the Sac-Joaquin Section. But West of Tracy got the better of the Blue Devils this season, posting a 52-37 win on Thursday in the first round of the section playoffs.
The No. 2-seeded Wolf Pack (23-5) may not be as good as their record, but they were strong enough to eliminate DHS, a section semifinalist the last two seasons. Star Whitney Howard had 19 points and 10 rebounds for West.
The Blue Devils got 12 points and 14 rebounds from junior Nikol Allison, although Allison was just 4-for-24 from the field. Torryn Taylor added seven points for the Blue Devils (13-14), who lose just one player to graduation.

Devils still probably in
The official Sac-Joaquin Section playoff brackets will not be released until Sunday but expect the Davis High girls basketball team to be included in the Division I field of 16.
According to my calculations – and this is assuming the results posted on maxpreps.com are correct – the Blue Devils (13-13, 7-5) would get the No. 15 seed and would face West of Tracy (20-5, 8-2 Tri-City Athletic League) in the first round. This is the same first-round matchup as last year when DHS pulled out a 60-46 win over the host Wolf Pack.
The Blue Devils put their hopes in jeopardy by losing both games of the Delta Valley Conference tournament when winning one would have assured them a playoff berth. They fell on Wednesday to fifth-place Franklin and lost to third-place Elk Grove, a team they had defeated twice this year, on Friday.
In my spreadsheet, DHS tied Golden Valley for 15th place. But because DVC foe Kennedy should get the top seed and the CIF’s tendency to not match up teams from the same conference in the first round, Golden Valley will likely be seeded No. 16 to create an all-Cougars matchup in the first round.
Interestingly enough, the Blue Devils may have been bailed out by former MEL rival Napa which defeated Vintage on Friday night. Had the Crushers won, they would have been in the playoffs ahead of DHS and Golden Valley, which would have been tied for the final spot in that situation. The CIF doesn’t list tiebreakers on their web Site, so not sure which team would have gotten the final spot in that scenario.

Jumper saves Devils
Monica Proeung hit a jump shot with 0.8 seconds left on the clock on Friday to lift the Davis High girls basketball team to a 36-34 win over Franklin.
The Blue Devils (12-10, 6-2 Delta Valley Conference) held a 34-29 lead with 1:05 left but Kim Manlangit hit a 3-pointer and Kynndal Cornelius made a layup to tie up the game with 30 ticks on the clock.
The final play was designed for Nikol Allison, but with the Blue Devil star covered and the clock winding down, Proeung took the shot.
It was an ugly all-around game as DHS turned the ball over 29 times and the Wildcats (9-12, 2-6) had 27 of their own.
Shelby Ferguson and Allison each had 13 points to lead DHS and Allison had 12 rebounds.

Blue Devils upset
The Davis High girls basketball team couldn’t find the basket on Friday and fell 43-41 to Valley, a team that had not won a game in league play. The Blue Devils shot 23.7 percent from the field for the contest.
Nikol Allison had 18 points and 20 rebounds – eight of which were offensive – to lead the DHS (10-10, 4-2 Delta Valley Conference) while Torryn Taylor had eight points and eight rebounds.
Torryn Taylor made one of two free throws to tie the game up at 41 with 26.5 seconds left. After a pair of misses by the Vikings (7-13, 1-5), Allison got the rebound and DHS called a timeout.
The ball went to Allison, whose shot missed. In the scrum for the rebound, Shelby Ferguson fouled Catalina Corpez, who sank both free throws with 2.9 on the clock. The Blue Devils were unable to get a final shot off.
The DHS boys basketball team (3-16, 0-6) also fell, losing 60-47 at Valley.

Cougars are fierce
SACRAMENTO - Kennedy High School's girls basketball team may have lost flashy guard Jazzi Johnson to graduation, but the Cougars haven't missed her much in the Delta Valley Conference. Kennedy used a 16-4 run in the second quarter on Friday to pull away from Davis for a 76-50 win.
The Blue Devils came into the game having won three in a row to begin league play, but they could not muster a comeback against a deep and talented Cougars team that figures to go unbeaten in the DVC.
DHS did make a nice run early, recovering from a 10-2 margin with eight of the next 10 points to close to 12-10. Kennedy, however, would lead 23-16 at the end of the quarter and then poured it on in the second period as the lead reached 20 points.
Cydhi Matsuoka scored a game-high 19 points, Melanie Khlok added 17 points and Deja Kinsey chipped in 14 points. Khlok might have had the biggest impact of the three with eight assists and four steals.
Malika Wilkins scored a team-high 12 points for DHS, Khaliya Wilkins added 11, all in the fourth. Nikol Allison had 10 points, all of those in the first half. Shelby Ferguson chipped in nine.

Devils run through Herd
The Davis High girls basketball team finally put a full game together on Friday and never trailed in demolishing Elk Grove 51-27. Nikol Allison had 20 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
The Blue Devils (8-8, 2-0 Delta Valley Conference) jumped out to a 17-6 lead after the first quarter behind 8-for-11 shooting from the field. Elk Grove cut the lead to eight briefly in the second quarter, but a jumper by Khaliya Wilkins with just over five minutes left in the half put the Blue Devils back up by double digits.
The DHS lead was no less than 10 for the remainder of the game.
After the Thundering Herd (12-4, 1-1) cut the lead to 10 at the end of the third quarter, the Blue Devils went on a 16-0 run over the first 5:45 of the final period to put the game away. Elk Grove scored only three points in the final period – all of which were free throws.
DHS also shut down Herd star Kara Boyles – who torched the Blue Devils for 32 points in one game last year – and held her to just two field goals and nine points.

Laying the Wood
The Davis High girls basketball team couldn’t recover from a 14-point deficit after the first quarter on Friday and fell to Will C. Wood of Vacaville 70-50. Jamie Capoot had a game-high 24 points for Wood.
The Wildcats pushed the ball up the court and shot 10-for-18 from the field in the first quarter as the Blue Devils had no answer defensively.
DHS (4-6) employed an effective full-court press in the fourth quarter and went on an 8-0 run to cut the Wood lead to 13, but that was as close as it would get. The Wildcats made their free throws to pull away.
Shelby Ferguson and Nikol Allison each had 13 points to lead the Blue Devils.
The Wildcats swept the three games as they won the JV game 42-20 and the freshman game 52-31.
