Gardner-Webb's upset of Kentucky is all the news today, as it should be.
It's worth noting that UC Davis was in the running for the spot G-W occupied in the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic. Aggie head coach Gary Stewart wanted to open the full Division I era in the same state in which UCD had won its D-II championship. There might have been some nice symmetry there. As the winds shifted with the Gazelle Group -- which organizes most of the big-time preseason events -- the Aggies started to look more like a candidate for the Connecticut bracket. With a swing through the Ivy League planned for early December, Stewart decided the Legends Classic was a better deal for his young team, in that it allowed them both play in a big-time atmosphere like Texas and get two exempt home games early in the season.
Clearly the Wildcats were ripe for an upset. Could UCD have done it? It's hard to say. Everyone I've talked to is really optimistic, although it's easy to be positive when you haven't lost a game yet. The season starts Sunday afternoon against LaVerne.

Mike, how come the Davis Enterprise website only shows three sports stories at a time? Sometimes the same stories stay up there while other ones are being published.
